ABOUT US

Ohana Pottery

Ohana Pottery is a small business of hand crafted artisanal functional art. My goal is to create beautiful ceramics that can be used everyday. Customizing and catering to my customers needs, color scheme and style is what makes my ceramics unique. I strive to incorporate my customers ideas into my work. My greatest joy is the satisfaction, of knowing, that my creation lives through another persons home and adds value in their lives.

I have always love creating art, it has always been a way for me to express myself.  I started pottery as a means for me to relax and reconnect with my artistic side.  I was initially drawn to the creative and functional side of ceramics,  a "hobby" - that captured me.  It still amazes me how a lump of clay can be transformed into something beautiful, useful and artistic.  Hand crafted art, carries the mark of the artist, one can never make the same exact pot again, making each piece unique and special.  Every piece I make, I do so with purpose and love.  My pots are made with the intent to add more, more value, more function, more beauty and more love.  Paragraph

The process

Ceramics art is a process. From a lump of clay thrown on the wheel or hand-built, it transforms the clay into a form.  After careful drying that can take couple of days to weeks, depending on the environment, it is ready for the "bisque" firing.  Essentially, bisque firing extracts the  moisture out of the clay body and make the pot porous and sturdy for handling for the next stage.  Glazing is and of itself an art, either using commercial glazes or mixed in the studio, color combinations, matte or glossy, textured or smooth adds a level dimension to the pot.  After application of the glaze either dipping or hand painting, the pot is ready for the second and final firing.  The goal of glaze firing is to reach a certain temperature, wherein the glaze melts and adheres into the pot, also known as vitrification.  The temperature that I use for most of my work reaches between 2160-2180 degrees Fahrenheit.  All these steps are necessary and vital in creating ceramics. One piece ceramics can range from 2-4 weeks to complete.  It is a labor of love, and like anything important in life it needs times, nurture and care.
